When sixty-nine percent of participants in the research study conducted by Citizens Research agree that adult children are entitled to large damage awards, there must be a central reason governing such a statement. Respondents were asked to strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree with the following statement: When a parent dies and had adult children, the children are entitled to a large monetary award if the party being sued is responsible for his or her death. These dramatic findings indicate that potential jurors are placing a great deal of value in having parents. It also indicates that when a parent is killed of dies through no fault of their own, but by the negligence of someone else or some other entity, this is reason enough to award money damages.

Our research reveals that forty-six percent of resondents believe it is appropriate to award large money damages in order to correct the behavior of the responsible party for the injuries or death of the plaintiff. Another thirty percent agreed to award the plaintiff large sums of money because they were injured as a result of someone else’s behavior and their injuries were not their fault. The statement we included in the study is as follows: The most important reason to award large money damages in a lawsuit is to: (a)Award the person suing for injuries he/she received through no fault of his/her own (b) Correct the behavior of the responsible party for injuries or death of the plaintiff.

This type of opinion can dramatically affect large money damages if a corporation is sued and loses its case. Citizens Research is conducting an ongoing research project that addresses this issue and other troublesome concerns for litigation in our current economic, political and social environment.
The findings on awarding large dollar awards present a potential challenge for any corporation being sued in our court system today. Two-thirds of our respondents want to affect a corporation’s bottom line if they are found guilty of wrong-doing in a court of law. Another twenty-five percent of the participants felt that corporations were needed for the country to survive; however, they still had reservations about letting corporations off the hook if they were sued and lost their case.
